Yesterday would have been a great day to do the Payette Lake Run.  It was probably a touch chilly at the starting line, but it wasn't that bad.  Today, on the other hand, would have been a very cold run.  It dropped below freezing at my humble abode last night and was still in the low 40s at about 11:00.  (I live about a dozen miles from the starting/finish line and work about two blocks away.)  It was a touch breezy, but nothing to write home about.

I hope your toe heals swiftly!  It is never any fun to be sidelined.

Thanks Madrunner, I'm praying that my toe mends quickly as well but being 50, i don't heal as fast as i use too!

It must be nice to live in McCall.  When we go, we stay at a friends cabin one mile from the start/finish line.  He's on Lick Creek Road.  It's soooo much fun to run past his place knowing I only have one mile left to go!  And my friends and family are always cheering me one and when it's hot, they spray me down with the garden hose as I run past.  Too much fun.  I'm sorry I missed it this year.

Well good luck with your Robie training and see you at the start line of Robie, 2011!

I also love the Payette Lake run because the course is so beautiful and I love the challenge of the 18 mile distance.  I was planning on running it this year as well but I broke the second to my little toe last Friday and cannot put my running shoe on without experiencing significant pain!   But I did get in Robie and the Great Potato Marathon this year and will do Barber to Boise as well.    Meanwhile I'll keep doing tempo runs and taking boot camp and spinning classes to keep me in shape for Robie training as soon as my little toe will let me put my running shoes back on again.

How was the weather for the Payette Lake run?  It looked really cold and windy from the McCall Hotel Camera.......................

I REALLY wanted to do the Payette Lake run this year.  Last year, I took home second place in my age division.  Sadly, this year, it wasn't in the cards.  Cue grumbling about blown out calves.  I did get in a lovely (although significantly shorter) run by the light of the setting sun in, though.  The first pain-free run I've done in nearly three months, I might add.  It was wonderful to be back at it.  Forced vacations make me restless.

Good luck on your Robie training.  Smiley

I ran the Payette Lake 18.6 mile Run yesterday... The backside has a few pretty good hills.  I figure that starts off my training!
Watch out Robie, here I come!

Greetings, fellow running maniacs!

This mad runner has been busy, busy, busy the last few months.  Sadly, it hasn't been busy running.  I got a touch over-ambitious with my training and managed to blow out both legs.   Shocked  Cry Fortunately, after taking some serious time off, the mad runner is finally ready to run again.   Grin

The mission is to finally get my revenge on the mountain.  To reach my objective, I'm planning on what is simultaneously the most and least ambitious training program I've ever undertaken.  It'll be fun!

Since I've taken most of the last three months off, I'm jumping back in at about three miles a day, five days a week.  I feel more than capable of doing higher mileage to start with, but I see no point in blowing out the legs right after getting back into running.  From there, I'm increasing my weekly mileage about five percent a week (aka the least ambitious ramping up of weekly mileage I've ever done) until I'm up to about 54 miles a week (aka the most ambitious weekly mileage I've ever done).

I ran my fastest ever half-marathon a hair over two years ago when I was running about 48 miles a week.  Since then, I've been training at a lower mileage in an attempt to trade quantity for quality.  (Nine to eighteen miles five days a week is a lot of time spent on the run every week.)  Ironically, I was running significantly faster and with fewer injuries when I wasn't going for high quality workouts.   Huh  So...  We'll see how well this works.

I'm planning on mostly skipping speedwork, at least speedwork other than tempo runs.  There will be a lot of those in the future.  I'm still hammering out the gory details, but by the time Robie rolls around, I hope to be ready.

The trip over the mountain is a mere 222 days, 18 hours, a few odd minutes and several seconds away as I write this.  What are you doing to get ready?  Smiley

Jim,

I don't know who it was, but it wasn't Ugly....However, in November, you may catch Ugly running up Rocky Canyon with steam coming from his nostrils (I'm still mad I had to walk so much!)....I will head to Boise and run it once as a confidence builder...I may do this at half-time when the Vandals are leading the Broncos 27 to 7.....

Robie Dudes:

Its almost time to get Robie Ready for 2011.

Ugly started training for Robie2010 in November. That probably wasn't soon enough. I looked at my Journal and was wondering 'What Went Wrong?' in Robie 2010. You see, I was cruising the first 5 miles and going under a PR and then suddenly hit the wall from mile 5 thru mile 8.6...Ugly had to walk around 15-20 times of segments lasting 30-200 yards. I was really hurting on the steep hills. So I realized what happened after looking at my Journal....

Ugly Lacked Discipline!

A summary from Websters defines discipline as.....'training that develops self-control, character, or orderliness and efficiency....strict control to enforce obedience of specific training.....

Ugly needs Discipline and I will start developing specific training as of this September 2010.....When I'm driving down the road and see a hill, I will stop and run up it! The 'Robie Simulator' is a great workout for the months of February and March. But, at first, a person needs to have legs 'hill ready' so he/she can do the 'Robie Simulator' with some ease.

Ugly must have order and self-control in the upcoming workouts. All too often, Ugly trains with pure randomness with no direction and no purpose. This is like trying to learn the digital code by randomly typing ones and zeros....It is a dead end...

Teresa99,

Thanks for the reminder on hills...Yuck! I think I'll start some type of hill training in December. There is no doubt that hills or hill-types are necessary for Robie...I'm thinking that maybe elipicals and stair steppers may be just as good?

As for your injuries and recurring pains, I'd go to an excercize specialist to see what may be the cause of the problems....Running is too good for health and too much fun to let injuries get in the way...My only advice is to start slow on the mileage (2-4 miles at 3-4 days per week) and don't push it too much and give it time...By time, I mean months and years.....Good Luck!
